Week 0 Prep Preview: Johnson Central at Lafayette

Johnson Central’s defense collapsed on Bell County Friday night in the Golden Eagles’ final scrimmage before the season starts.

Who: Johnson Central (0-0) at Lafayette (0-0)

Kickoff: Friday, 6:00 p.m.

Location: Ishmael Stadium, Lexington.

Coaches: Johnson Central, Jim Matney. Lafayette, Eric Shaw.

Notes: Johnson Central was close to winning another state championship last season. The Golden Eagles fell to Franklin-Simpson 14-12.

The Golden Eagles are using that as motivation this season.

Johnson Central returns a lot of talent on both sides of the ball including standouts Andrew Clifton up front, Devin Johnson at linebacker and four-year starting quarterback Riley Preece.

Preece led the Golden Eagles to a state championship his freshman season. He’s looking to end his career the same way he started it.

Johnson Central did lose the Horn Brothers up front on the defensive line and Joe Jackson in the backfield.

Jackson was a 2,000 yard rusher for the Golden Eagles.

Lafayette won its opening game of the season last year and that was it.

The Generals struggled in the tough Class 6A.

Lafayette didn’t net 1,000 yards of total offense last season.

The Generals are a Class 6A program, though and that is always a challenge playing up.

Who 2 Watch: Johnson Central’s line.

The Golden Eagles will look to come out and control the line of scrimmage like they always do, but it will be extra important this season.

Without Jackson in the backfield, look for standout Devin Johnson to get the bulk of the carries.

Preece will run the ball as well to try and open the passing game up.

Who will emerge as the complimentary back to Johnson will be key.

Look for Johnson Central’s line to help give some room to run for whoever the No. 2 back will be.
