Prudence Bailey

Prudence Virginia Bailey, a longtime resident of Flat Gap, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, November 13th, at the age of 101.

She was born in Thealka, November 11, 1917, to the late James and Sarah Sparks Cottle.  Most of her young years were spent living in that area, where she attended school at the Muddy Branch Coal Camp.  While working at the Paintsville Clinic, she met the love of her life, Arville Bailey. They were wed in 1940 and moved to Flat Gap, where he taught school and she proudly “went to housekeeping,” raising their three children. After her husband’s untimely death at the age of 43, Prudence looked toward expanding her education so as to better provide for her family.  She attained her 8th Grade and High School Equivalency diplomas from Johnson Central High School in her early fifties. Successful completion of a typing course led her to begin her professional secretarial career with the Johnson County Soil Conservation District at the age of 51, where she worked until her retirement at 75.

During Prudence’s post-retirement years, she was actively involved in her community. She served in the Chair of Electa in the Order of Eastern Star for over 20 years. She was a member of the Red Bush Busy Bees Homemakers Club and enjoyed the fellowship of the Ladies Circle at the United Baptist Church of Paintsville. In 1992 she was commissioned to the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels. Prudence has been a proud and faithful member of the Flat Gap Baptist Church since 1946. Her sincere testimony and beautiful prayers will long be remembered by any who heard them.

Prudence was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Arville; and devoted daughter Brenda Joyce Collins. She was also preceded by three brothers, Henry, James (Junior) and Harry Cottle, and her sister, Vivian Grunewald.

She is survived by her two sons, Wade Marion Bailey (Katherine Nicholas) of Richmond, and James Arville Bailey (Glenda Reed Bailey) of Lexington; son-in-law, Michael Collins of Flat Gap; six grandchildren, Kristen Bailey Preston, Kelly Collins-Johnson, Jami Bailey, Charles Bailey, Erin Collins-Buchanan and Nicholas Hertelendy; six great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and many dear neighbors and friends who called her their sister in Christ.

Funeral services will be held at the Flat Gap Baptist Church at 1 p.m. on Saturday with Brother Robert Blanton, Pastor, officiating.  Burial will follow in the Skaggstown Cemetery.
