Barbara Rice

1933-2018

Barbara Dean Taylor Rice, 85, of Houston, Texas, died Friday, Dec. 14, 2018 in Webster, Texas.

Barbara was born at Golden Rule Hospital in Paintsville on Oct. 14, 1933 to Bert and Brida Castle Taylor. She grew up in Staffordsville and was a 1951 graduate of Flat Gap High School. She obtained a position in the County Agent’s office after graduation from the Mayo Vocation School in Paintsville. In 1954, she married and relocated to Dayton, Ohio, her home for the next 62 years. She worked at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton until her retirement as a Source Selection Officer. She loved to sightsee and spoil her grandchildren. She was an exceptional hostess and made sure there was always plenty of delicious food for all to enjoy. No one will ever forget her pecan pies, chocolate chip cookies, fudge or chicken salad.

She lived happily with her husband for 54 years until his death in 2008. In 2016, Barbara relocated to Houston, and lived with her younger daughter, Debra. The change in climate, proximity to family and introduction to cooking shows were welcome changes. Her sports affiliations, however, did not change. She was a fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes, Cincinnati Bengals and Cincinnati Reds for life.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Betty Taylor Blanton, as well as her husband, Arnold Rice. Her love of Wright State basketball and NASCAR could be attributed directly to him.

She is survived by her brother, Gilbert Taylor of Flatwoods; two daughters, LaDonna (Robert) Lally of Princeton Junction, NJ, and Debra Pryon of Houston; four grandchildren, Robert (Kelsey) Lally of Cross Roads, Texas, Stephanie (Joshua) Prokosch of Minneapolis, Mn., Katharine Pyron of Houston, and Alexandria (Jay) Williams of Pearland, Texas. Barbara was extraordinarily blessed with three precious great-grandchildren, Aidan Lally. Lally Prokosch and Faith Williams.

She will be greatly missed and never  forgotten.

A celebration of her life will occur during Christmas week in Houston. Final interment with her beloved, Arnold Lee, will be at the Dayton National Cemetery, 4100 West Third Street, Dayton, Ohio, in the Spring of 2019.
