James (Jim) Burkett Jr., age 74, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, September 9th, 2020 at his home in Paintsville. Jim was born January 18, 1946 in Johnson County to the late James Sr. and Loretta (Fairchild) Burkett.

In addition to his parents, Jim is preceeded in death by one sister, Arlene Nickell of Flat Gap.  

Jim is survived by his wife of 55 years, Brenda Kay (Castle) Burkett and four children, Dyan Hefner (Robert), Lewisburg WV; Jeffrey Burkett (Pauline), Paintsville; Jamie Burkett (Tonya) Ulysses; and Andrea Davis (Eric) of Richmond.  He is also survived by ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; Robbi and Nathaniel Hefner; Amanda Adams, Jeffrey Burkett II, Stephanie Mollett; Hannah Vanhoose, Grant Burkett; Bailey Davis; Ben and Elijah Burkett; Carson and McKenzie Hefner; Lucas Mollett and Allison Adams.  

Surviving as well are four sisters, Darlene Rice, Naples Fl.; Carolynn Nickell, Mt. Vernon, IL; Debi Pinson and Kaye Burkett Morrison, both of Paintsville; two brothers, Mickey Burkett and Tony Burkett, both of Paintsville and one half brother, Eddie Sparks of Wittensville.

Jim was a graduate of Flat Gap High School and went on to graduate from Morehead State University, receiving a Bachelor’s and a Master’s Degree in Counseling. He worked for Mountain Comprehensive Care as a counselor, and was also a partner in Mick and Jim’s Furniture, Paintsville. He was owner of Pioneer Builders, as well as a developer and contractor for Burkshire Estates. He brokered coal and gas leases until his retirement in 2017.

Jim’s life was spent working for the Lord teaching Sunday school, youth classes and assisting in the construction of Little Mud Lick Church of God as well as Lowmansville First Church of God. He faithfully attended Little Paint Church of God at East Point. Jim enjoyed hunting, was an avid fisherman and was happiest while making memories with family and friends.  

Public visitation was held Friday, September 11, 2020 at Phelps and Son Funeral Home, Paintsville. Funeral services were conducted at Little Paint Church of God on Saturday, September 12, 2020 with pastors Jeff White, Robert Hefner and Robbi Hefner officiating. Burial followed at Highland Memorial Park, Staffordsville.

Ilene F. Castle, 80, of Nippa died Thursday, September 10, 2020 at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House in Huntington, West Virginia.

She was born September 18, 1939 in Johnson County, she was the daughter of the late Buster Auxier and Gertrude (Music) Auxier.

Mrs. Castle is survived by her husband, Bobby R. Castle; two sons, Joe Borror Jr of Evans, Georgia and Jeff Borror of Sebring, Florida; three sisters, Elva Stambaugh of Groveport, Ohio, Vandella Caudill of Hager Hill and Woodsey Collins of Louisville; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services were held Saturday, September 12, 2020 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home. Burial followed in the Clark – Castle Cemetery, Nippa. Phillip Wireman and Joe Borror, Jr. officiated.

Pamela G. Cecil, 53, of Lowmansville died Tuesday, September 8, 2020 at her home.

She was born December 2, 1966 in Johnson County. She was the daughter of Winford Salyers of Lowmansville and the late Darlene (Scarberry) Salyers.

Pam is survived by her father; husband, David Thomas Cecil; one daughter, Alyssa Megan Scarberry of Gunlock; two brothers, James Salyers and his wife, Pam of Sidney, Ohio and Jeremy Salyers of Tampa, Florida; and a host of special friends and loved ones.

She was a member of the Tutor Key Community Baptist Church and worked at Porter Elementary Daycare.

Funeral services were held Friday, September 11, 2020 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son. Burial followed in the Salyers Family Cemetery at Lowmansville. Arthur Scarberry and Todd Scarberry officiated.

John H. Fraley, 86, of East Point, died Saturday, September 12, 2020 at Highlands ARH in Prestonsburg. He was born September 24, 1933 in Martin County. He was the son of the late Blaine Fraley and Gladys Wilson Fraley. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by one brother, Billy Ray Fraley; two sisters: Betty Jean Setser and Donna Huhn.

Mr. Fraley is survived by his loving wife, Judy Diley Fraley; one son, James B. Fraley (Rhonda Dalton) of Dans Branch, West Virginia; one daughter, Sandra Fraley Van Dyne (Kevin) of Hilliard, Ohio; three brothers: Earl Fraley of Berlin Heights, Ohio, James Fraley (Bonnita) of Groveport, Ohio, Terry Fraley (Margenia) of Elyria, Ohio; five sisters: Mary Whitney of Tutor Key, Joyce Horn of Inez, Diane Bowen of Berlin Heights, Ohio, Gayle Melville (Michael) of Sandusky, Ohio, Brenda Wilson (Chris) of Sandusky, Ohio; three granddaughters: Sara Neal of Powell, Ohio, Cassidy Neal-Brockett (Adam) of Watkins Glen, New York, Olivia Neal-Leyland (Tom) of Perrysburg, Ohio; one grandson, Jayce Fraley of Dans Branch, West Virginia; one great grandson, Graham Leyland of Perrysburg, Ohio.

Mr. Fraley was a proud veteran of the United States Army. John was the owner of Fraley Auto Center in Bradenton, Florida for over 20 years.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, September 19, 2020 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home. Friends may visit at the Phelps & Son Funeral Home on Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. Full military honors will be conducted by the Big Sandy Chapter 18 DAV of Auxier. Don Richard Johnson, age 72 died Monday, September 7, 2020 at the Select Specialty Hospital in Danville after sharing his life of 72 years and 13 days.

He was born August 25, 1948 in Weeksbury.

He was the son of the late Russell Johnson and Sunie (Fannin) Williamson Johnson. In addition to his parents, Don Richard is preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Ann (Music) Johnson; and four sisters.

He is survived by one daughter Dawn Rochelle Stambaugh and son in law, Mitch Stambaugh; one sister, Naomi Faye Mollett and her husband Robert; one brother, Clarence Johnson and his wife, Marsha; one sister in law, Teresa S. Butcher; special caregiver, Stephanie Cisco; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Don worked over 30 years as a magazine salesman. He was a 1968 high school graduate and joined the United States Air Force in the fall of 1968 with an honorable discharge in the fall of 1972. Don married his lovely wife Patricia in Paintsville on November 4, 1972. They were married until her death in 2018 for 46 years. He and his wife were also very involved in the Sons of Confederate Veterans, going to re-enactments and putting on history lessons for local schools.

Funeral services were held Friday, September 11, 2020 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home. Burial followed in the Fannin Cemetery at Hammond. Helen P. Reed, 88, of Hurricane, W.Va., formerly of Flat Gap, died Saturday, September 12, 2020 in Hurricane, WV. She was born February 3, 1932 in Paintsville to the late Thomas and Pearlie Wheeler Meade. Helen was a member of the First Free Will Baptist Church and a homemaker. On November 7, 1952 in Paintsville she married Edward A. Reed who precedes her in death (May 31, 2012). She is survived by 1 daughter, Chloe Gibson (Dr. Leo Gibson, Jr.) of Hurricane, WV., 2 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. Also preceding her in death is 1 son, David Edward Reed (2010). Graveside funeral services were scheduled for Tuesday, September 15, 2020 at Highland Memorial Park Cemetery. Larry Blair officiated. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the First Free Will Baptist Church by contacting the Preston Funeral Home at, (606) 789-4212.
