Grace Barber

1928-2021

Grace Barber, 93, of Paintsville, died peacefully Monday, March 8, 2021, at Mountain Manor Nursing Home in Paintsville.

She was born in Johnson County, Jan. 1, 1928, the daughter of Clarence and Ella McKenzie Kerns.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by four sisters, Jessie Eigensee, Neva Evelyn Brown, Ruth Castle Maddox and Doris Annette Kerns; five brothers, Howard Kerns, James Kerns, Jack Kerns, Richard Kerns and Kenneth Kerns; one son-in-law, Richard Henry Potter II; and two grandchildren, Tanya Potter Bailey and Richard Henry Potter III.

She is survived by her loving husband of over 74 years, Bryan Barber, of Paintsville; four children, Donna Potter, of Dudley, N.Car., Connie Phelps (James), of Indianapolis, Ind., Tim Barber (Joann), of Staffordsville, and Deborah McKenzie (Paul David), of Paintsville; four grandchildren, Amy Phelps, of Franklin, Ind., Melissa Estep (Tommy), of Noblesville, Ind., Eric Potter, of Dudley, N.Car. and Matthew Barber (Charity), of Madisonville; one brother, Douglas Kerns (Madge), of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other family members.

She served her country during WWII assembling radios for military use in a Lexington factory. Following the war, she worked for several years as a nursing assistant and private duty nurse at the Paintsville Hospital. She also worked as a store clerk in the TG&Y Department Store.

Funeral services were held Thursday, March 11, 2021, in the Jones-Preston Funeral Chapel with Rev. Tyler Brumfield officiating. Burial followed at Highland Memorial Park, Staffordsville. Arrangements were under the direction of Jones-Preston Funeral Home of Paintsville.

Kathy Crigger

1952-2021

Kathy McKenzie Crigger, 68, of Staffordsville, died Thursday, March 11, 2021, at City of Hope Hospital in Orange, California.

She was born in Johnson County, Aug. 28, 1952, the daughter of Betty Evelyn Pelphrey McKenzie, of Staffordsville, and the late James Orville McKenzie.  

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her loving husband, Charlie Crigger, of Staffordsville; one daughter, Mackenzie Crigger, of Orange, Calif.; and two brothers, Barry Scott McKenzie, of Lexington, and James Ishmael McKenzie, of Wittensville.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 23, 2021, in the Jones-Preston Funeral Chapel with Rev. Tyler Brumfield officiating. Burial followed at Johnson County Memorial Cemetery, Staffordsville. Arrangements were under the direction of Jones-Preston Funeral Home of Paintsville.

Nathan Salisbury

1976-2021

Nathan Leith Salisbury, 44, of Oil Springs, died Thursday, March 18, 2021, at Highlands ARH.  

He was born in Pike County, May 31, 1976, the son of Bud and Louise Salisbury, of Oil Springs.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Nikki Salisbury; two sons, Nash Keegan Salisbury and Nate Maddox Salisbury; one brother, Jody Salisbury (Summer); one nephew, Carter Landon Salisbury; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Clarence and Jodie Music, all of Oil Springs.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 23, 2021, in the Jones-Preston Funeral Chapel with Mikey Jarrell officiating. Burial followed at Highland Memorial Park, Staffordsville. Arrangements were under the direction of Jones-Preston Funeral Home of Paintsville.

Larry Spradlin

1956-2021

Larry Kennith Spradlin, 64, of West Van Lear, died Saturday, March 13, 2021.  

He was born in Johnson County, Sept. 11, 1956, the son of Burdis Mae Cantrell Spradlin, of West Van Lear, and the late Robert “Bud” Spradlin.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by two sons, Oliver Spradlin (Tiffany) and Andrew Spradlin; one brother, Robert Spradlin Jr. (Teresa); one sister, Ginger Spradlin (Mike); two grandchildren, Natalie Spradlin and Ian Spradlin; two nephews, Shawn Spradlin (Angela) and Tyler Spradlin; two nieces, Rachelle Osborne (Kenneth) and Deborah Weatherford (Alex); one great-niece, Candice Morgan; and two great-nephews, Joseph Morgan and Michael Osborne.

Larry graduated from Johnson Central High School, retired as a Millwright and from CSX railroad. He resided in West Van Lear and lived life his own way. He was a loving son, father, grandfather, brother and friend.  

We, the family, feel that our loss will be shared by all those who knew and loved him.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 17, 2021, at Jones-Preston Funeral Home. Burial followed at the Johnson County Memorial Cemetery, Staffordsville. Arrangements were under the direction of Jones-Preston Funeral Home of Paintsville.
