Ruth Meade Blair, 87, of Grassy Creek, Staffordsville, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 2021, at her residence.   

She was born in Johnson County, April 27, 1933, the daughter of the late Paris Meade and Nora Burchett Meade.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Blair; three brothers, Ruby Meade, Carl Meade and Ray Meade; and one sister, Annabelle Stambaugh.

She is survived by one daughter, Joyce Blair, of Staffordsville; one brother, Clyde Meade (Dorothy), of Michigan; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 21, 2021, at the Jones-Preston Funeral Chapel with James Kelly Caudill officiating. Burial followed at Richmond Cemetery, Route 40 East, Paintsville. Arrangements were under the direction of Jones-Preston Funeral Home of Paintsville.

Avonelle Conley

Avonelle Conley, 89, of East Point, died Friday, Feb. 5, 2021, at her daughter's residence.

She was born in Floyd County, Aug. 24, 1931, the daughter of the late Judd Rice and Margaret “Maggie” Music Rice.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John P. Conley (Jan. 27, 2018); five brothers, Samuel K. Rice, Thomas J. Rice, John D. Rice, Verlie C. Rice and James Roy Rice; and three sisters, Beatrice Johnson, Vertrice Cartmell and Lois Richardson.

She is survived by one daughter, Sharon Conley (Jim), of East Point; two grandchildren, Kevin Conley (Angie) and Kelli Holbrook (Mark); four grandchildren, Dillon Conley, Tyler Holbrook, Drew Conley and Brandon Holbrook; a special nephew, Tommy Rice; and several nieces, nephews and many friends.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Feb. 7, 2021, at the Phelps & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Charlie Heater, Paul Wayne Browning and Jeff White officiating. Burial followed at Lakeview Memorial Cemetery, Staffordsville. Arrangements were under the direction of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home of Paintsville.

Donnie Daniels, 71, of Thealka, died Sunday, Feb. 7, 2021, at his daughter's residence in Meally.

He was born in Johnson County, July 14, 1949, the son of the late Lawrence Daniels and Mary Borders Daniels.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Doug Daniels, Bob Daniels and James Daniels.

He is survived by one daughter, Mary Daniels Blair (Michael), of Meally; and one sister, Wanda Cantrell, of Paintsville.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2021, at the Phelps & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Richard “Bubby” Davis officiating. Burial will follow at the Daniels Family Cemetery, Thealka. Arrangements are under the direction of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home of Paintsville.

John Wesley Dickerson, 56, of Van Lear, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 2021, at Pikeville Medical Center.

He was born in Johnson County, Dec. 2, 1964, the son of the late Albert Burchett and Fannie Dickerson.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-father, Tony Johnson.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia (Wells) Dickerson; three sons, Johnathan Dickerson (Cigie), of West Van Lear, Wesley Dickerson (Brittani), of Swamp Branch, and Adam Dickerson, of Van Lear; one sister, Amanda Dickerson, of Prestonsburg; and four grandchildren, Hudson Dickerson, Chloe Dickerson, Austin and Bentley.

“Buddy” McKenzie

James Michael “Buddy” McKenzie, 69, of Paintsville died Saturday, Feb. 6, 2021, at University of Kentucky Hospital, Lexington.

He was born in Johnson County, May 30, 1951, the son of the late James Arthur “Archie” McKenzie and Oma Salyers McKenzie.

He was a proud and faithful member of the Rockhouse Freewill Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Barbara Vanhoose and Dora Brady.

He is survived by his loving wife, Pauline Damron McKenzie, whom he married on June 22, 1970; two children,a son, Christopher M. McKenzie (Tamela), of Paintsville; and a daughter, Chrystal M. McKenzie, of Paintsville; one sister, Francis McKenzie Smith, of Paintsville; two grandchildren, Lauren Nicole McKenzie and her fiance, John Bargo, and Zia Keriden McKenzie.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 11, 2021, at the Phelps & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Danny Ward, Gary Blair and Joe Carroll officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Park, Staffordsville.

Friends may visit at the funeral home from 12 p.m. until 9 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 10, and on Thursday after 9 a.m. until time of services at 1 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home of Paintsville.

Mitchell Mollette

Mitchell Mollette, 85, of Prestonsburg, formerly of Johnson County, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2021, at Cornerstone Hospital, Huntington, West Virginia.

He was born Jan. 31, 1936, in Johnson County, the son of the late Ali Mollette and Ada Mollette.

He was retired from Paintsville Utilities and was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, James Mollette and Sherman Mollette; and one grandson, Johnny Ross.

He is survived by three sons, James Mollette, of Wittensville, Kenny Mollette, of Meally, and Austin Mollette, of Prestonsburg; one daughter, Sandy Hundall, of Meally; 10 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 8, 2021, at the Phelps & Son Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed at the Mollette Family Cemetery, Meally. Arrangements were under the direction of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home of Paintsville.

Dr. Thomas Thomasson, 70, of Parker, Col., formerly of Holden, W.Va., died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2021, at his mothers residence.

Dr. Thomas Thomasson was born at Holden, W.Va., March 16, 1950, the son of Lucille Sergent Thomasson, of Thelma, and the late Edward M. Thomasson.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one brother, Dana Thomasson.

He is survived by his wife, Karen Dutko Thomasson; two daughters, Andrea Kessel (Jason) and Leslie Thomasson, both of Parker, Col.; his mother, Lucille Sergent Thomasson; five grandchildren, Michael, Makenna, Blake, Addison and Alexandria; one half-brother, David and Keith Muncey, of Cleveland, Ohio; and two half-sisters, Danielle and Terry Tyson, both of Cleveland, Ohio.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1, 2021, at the Jones-Preston Funeral Chapel with Tyler Brumfield officiating. Entombment followed at Highland Memorial Park, Staffordsville. Full military honors were conducted by Auxier Chapter 18 DAV. Arrangements were under the direction of Jones-Preston Funeral Home of Paintsville.
