Randall Lee Butcher, 74, of Van Lear, died Saturday, Nov. 21, 2020, at his residence.

He was born at Van Lear, April 20, 1946, to the late Ashley Butcher and Nora Webb Butcher.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Ann Butcher; two brothers, Gene Butcher and Harold Butcher; and two sisters, Rose Marie Hierra and Jewell Sue Butcher.

He is survived by one son, Tyler Cooley, of Magoffin County; four daughters, Sheila Butcher Wells, of Paintsville, Nora Butcher, of Flat Gap, and Angela Butcher and Alyssa Crider, both of Van Lear; five brothers, Chester Butcher, Darrell Butcher, Foley Butcher, Sheldon Butcher and Charles Butcher; two sisters, Lorena Hall and Norina Hackworth; four grandchildren, Jasmine Butcher, Haley Butcher, Lilly Butcher and Joslin Glover; and one great-grandchild.

Private services were held for the immediate family on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2020, at the Phelps & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Tommy Meade officiating. Burial followed at the Butcher Family Cemetery, Van Lear. Arrangements were under the direction of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home of Paintsville.

Darrell Keith Haney, 53, of Denver, died Thursday, Nov. 19, 2020.

He was born in Johnson County, April 24, 1967, the son of Eldalene Blair Haney, of Denver, and the late Chester Haney Jr.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Lee Haney.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his son, Christopher Keith Haney, of Denver; one sister, Sandy Ratliff  (Larry), of Denver; one sister-in-law, Melissa Harper, of Sadieville; one nephew, Travis Lee Haney (Sarah), of Richmond; and one great-nephew, Sebastian Lee Haney, of Richmond; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, family members and friends.

Private services were held for the immediate family on Monday, Nov. 23, 2020, at the Phelps & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Jerry Colvin and Philllip Ramey officiating. Earlene Hughes, 61, of Winchester, formerly of East Point, died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2020, at Clark Regional Medical Center, Winchester.

She was born in Floyd County, Nov. 20, 1958, the daughter of the late Earl and Jessery (Osborne) Collins.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Don “Wormy” Hughes (April 20, 2019); one grandson, Michael Crowe; and one sister, Judy Justice.

She is survived by three daughters, Donna Starling (Troy) and Rena McGuire (Jeff), both of Mount Sterling, and Mary Jane Simmons (Tony), of Ohio; four grandchildren, Jody McGuire, Conner McGuire, Christian Crowe and Colton Starling; one great-grandchild, Raven Crowe; and one brother, Wendell Collins, of East Point.

Sophia Layne, 82, of West Van Lear, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 2020, at Spring Hope, North Carolina.

She was born in Johnson County, July 14, 1938, the daughter of the late Bernard and Norma Perkins Francis.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, James Slone; her second husband, Charles Layne; one brother, Bernard A. Francis Jr.;  and one nephew, Ronnie Baldwin.

She is survived by one daughter, Janie Rice (Danny), of Spring Hope, N.Car.; one son, David Slone (Kelli), of Hayes, Va.; one sister, Mary Baldwin (Clarence), of Birmingham, Ala.; three grandsons, Tim Rice (Patti), Brandon Rice (Amanda) and PFC Alex Slone; six great-granddaughters, Hailey (Michael), Tailar, Camryn, Cassidy, Daizy and Laila; one great-great-grandson, Dallas; and one great-nephew, Matthew Baldwin (Keagan.)

Funeral services were held Thursday, Nov. 19, 2020, at the Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel with Ronnie Spriggs and Roger Hill officiating. Burial followed at the Perkins Cemetery, Swamp Branch. Arrangements were under the direction of Jones-Preston Funeral Home of Paintsville.

She was born in Pike County, Feb. 25, 1947, the daughter of the late Tomas Martin and Mollie (Damron) Martin.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Marlon Martin and Roger Dale Martin; and one sister, Judith Martin.

She is survived by one brother, Samuel Martin (Lavonda), of Salyersville; two sisters, Lenetta Sawyers (Bruce), of Pikeville, and Debbie McCool (Bobby), of Van Lear; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family would like to give special thanks to her caregivers, Laura Hall, Missy Casebolt and Janet Adams.

Gene Tackett

After sharing his life with us for 77 years, 9 months, and 29 days, Gene Edward Tackett, 77, of Sitka, died Monday, Nov. 16, 2020, at Paul B. Hall Medical Center.

He was born in Johnson County, Jan. 18, 1943, the son of the late Clarence Edward and Nina Richardson Tackett.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Melissa Ann Tackett Newman.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Ann Tackett; one son, Keith Edward Tackett (Brandi), of Sitka; three brothers, Joe Lee Tackett (Fannin), of Wayne, W.Va., Harry Allen Tackett (Cindy), of Staffordsville, and Billy Franklin Tackett (Cindy), of Grafton, Ohio; three sisters, Nina Sue Dooley (Jim), of South Webster, Ohio, Geraldine Rae Keeton (Darrell), of Brushy, and Vicky Ilene McCullen, of Clarksville, Tenn.; and two grandchildren, Zachary Clay Newman and Chase Newman, both of Lexington.

He served in the United States Army. He entered the Army on Dec. 24, 1959, at Ashland. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 5, 1965, at Fort Hamilton, New York. He held the rank of Specialist 4.

He was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend.

He will be sadly missed by his loving family, friends and community.

We, the family, feel our loss will be shared by all who knew and loved him. Gene, you will never be forgotten.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 21, 2020, at Father's House of Prayer with Derek Meade officiating. Burial followed at Highland Memorial Park, Staffordsville. Full military honors were conducted by Auxier Chapter #18 D. A. V. Arrangements were under the direction of Jones-Preston Funeral Home of Paintsville.

Don Webb

1949-2020

Donzel “Don” Lee Webb, 71,of Stambaugh, died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2020, at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center, Paintsville, surrounded by his immediate family.

He was born at Lovely, feb. 19, 1949, the son of the late Joe Ward Webb and Ruby Kirk Webb.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Deborah Webb; and one son, Kelly Joe Webb.

He is survived by his wife, Anna Jane Webb; one son, Adam Webb (Ashley); four grandchildren, Austin Webb, Tate Webb, Taylyn Webb and Carly Harkins; and his loyal and loving rottweiler, Luke Webb.

Don and Anna were married on Sept. 15, 1990, at that time he met Rev. Charles Stapleton, who not only became his best friend, but also led him to know Jesus Christ. Don was baptized at the Pigeon Enterprise Baptist Church and is a member of the House of Refuge Church in Paintsville.

He graduated from Warfield High School at the age of 16 and went to work as a truck driver for a coal company. In 1968, he joined the United States Air Force and served as a jet mechanic in Vietnam, as well as on other Air Force bases where he was stationed during his four year tenure. Don worked as a coal miner for many years until an injury deemed him unable to return to coal mining. He then attended Kentucky Barber College and owned and operated Webb's Barber Shop in Salyersville. Don was most recently employed by the Johnson County Sheriff's Department as a bailiff.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 21, 2020, at the Phelps & Son Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed at the Kentucky Veteran's Cemetery North East at Grayson. Full military honors were conducted. Doris Blevins and Wayne Fields officiated.

Don was an avid animal lover and the family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Johnson County Animal Shelter by calling the shelter, (606) 297-7387, or, Phelps & Son Funeral Home, (606)789-8989.
