Police: Johnson County constable nearly hit by DUI driver

The driver of a Honda SUV was charged with DUI after, police said, he nearly hit a Johnson County constable as his vehicle traveled across oncoming traffic before crashing into a tree.

A Hagerhill man is facing a DUI charge after allegedly wrecking his vehicle in midday traffic Monday while driving under the influence.

According to Paintsville Police Department Captain Jonathan Holbrook, Jitendrakumar Patel, 29, was driving a Honda Pilot north on Ky. 321 near the intersection with James S. Trimble Blvd. when he crossed the southbound lane and left the roadway.

Patel allegedly narrowly avoided a head-on collision with a pickup truck driven by Johnson County District 2 Constable Ryan Caudill, who was heading southbound at the time.

According to Holbrook, Patel’s vehicle then struck a tree with force enough to turn the vehicle around.

Patel was taken to Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center for evaluation before being booked into the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center on one count of DUI. According to the jail’s records, Patel was released later that day.
