Kentucky State Police reports that a Johnson County man died in a motorcycle crash in Floyd County Thursday.

KSP spokesperson Trooper William Petry said that Dakota Hampton, 24, of Wittensville, died in a crash that occurred on U.S. 23 in Ivel at approximately 6 p.m. on Thursday.

Hampton was not wearing a helmet, Petry said, and was traveling northbound toward Prestonsburg when he fell off the motorcycle.

“Upon troopers’ arrival it was determined the operator of the motorcycle had fallen off the bike while traveling north on the highway,” the statement from Kentucky State Police said.

Hampton was transported to Pikeville Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after midnight, the press release said. U.S. 23 was closed as officials reconstructed the crash.

Petry said toxicology results are pending for Hampton. Trooper William Howard continues the investigation.

It was the second motorcycle crash that caused a death in two days locally. On July 25, KSP officials investigated a motorcycle crash on Feds Creek in Pike County that involved a motorcycle and a vehicle. John Mollett of Jones Fork, who drove the motorcycle, was pronounced dead at that scene.
