The Johnson County Fiscal Court took steps in a regular meeting Monday to continue a truck lease program that has resulted in big savings for the county in years past.

“This is the lease program where we’re able to lease a couple Mack trucks for use in the road department. It’s a one-year lease. We lease them, then we return them, then we turn around and lease them the following year.

The trucks, typically, because of the favorable lease terms that are negotiated with (the Kentucky Association of Counties), the trucks are sold and they return the fiscal court what we paid for them and in some instances return additional dollars beyond."

The sole bidder for the vehicles was Worldwide Equipment, and was accepted, pending approval of the bid’s specifications by the county road foreman. The quote was for two new, 2020 model year Mack tri-axle dump trucks with 16 foot bodies, priced at $144,922 each.

McKenzie said the trucks would be delivered in August, but the current trucks need to be returned in June.

“There will be a gap, between us selling the old trucks we have and taking delivery of the new ones, if this is approved, but we’re taking some measures to stockpile material while we can.” McKenzie said.

The fiscal court also:

• Approved a bid for blacktop through Mountain Enterprises, for $95.80 per ton for asphalt base and $99.80 per ton for asphalt surface. Again, this was the only bid submitted to the court.

• Appointed Linda Sumpter as the new county finance officer, a position which will now be part-time.

• Approved an emergency easement, already being executed, after Trimble Lane on Ky. 40 experienced a bridge failure, necessitating a temporary new route for residents to reach their property.

• Approved regular internal transfers including $62,500 to the jail fund.
