The Johnson County Animal Shelter will be hosting a Furry Fall Fundraiser event from noon to 4 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 10, at the Paintsville Recreation Center. The event, described as a gospel sing, chili dinner, and vendor fair, will serve as a way to raise money for the shelter and “its continuing mission to provide safe haven for the abandoned, abused and neglected animals of Johnson County until the can find forever homes of their very own”, according to the shelter’s Facebook event page.
According to shelter volunteer Lisa Roberts, “We (the shelter) are responsible for 75 percent of our budget. It takes about $98,000 to run the shelter (each year) and only 25 percent is covered by funding from the government. I think people may be aware that we are responsible for all the utilities — electric, water, garbage, phone, all that.”
Because of that, she said, the shelter needs the community support.
“Especially with the winter coming and the extreme temperatures, our electric bills sometimes run $800 a month. We are non-profit, so we always need those donations,” she said.
Regarding the shelter’s current influx of animals, Roberts said, “In the last two weeks, one day we had twenty pups come in, and then we had three different moms with pups come in. We never saw a decline in population this year. Usually you see periods of a declining in population. This year it’s just been a steady population- no decline whatsoever. Of course, with that, you have a constant need of supplies.
“We still have about 50 or so cats, “ she added.
According to Roberts, as of press time on Tuesday, the shelter was set to accept 16 more dogs from the family who lost their home in Paintsville to a fire earlier that morning.
Sunday’s fundraising event to support the shelter’s efforts requires a $5 admission price per person. Attendees can enjoy music by Troy Burchett and the Postmen, Rose & Sandy and other gospel acts as well an assortment of chili and toppings, grilled cheese, desserts and drinks (take out is available). Attendees can also shop during the event’s mini-vendor fair for unique arts & crafts.
If you are interested in supporting the shelter but are unable to make it to the event, donations can be made via PayPal at, email@example.com, or by mail at, JCAS Post Office Box 1313 Paintsville, KY 41240.
