PRESTONSBURG — The third time was a charm for one local middle school student, who earned her third scholarship to the University of Kentucky and other prizes during the 2018 MathCounts competition in Prestonsburg.

Students on Highland Elementary School’s Community Problem Solving team have taken aim at an issue that struck close to home for them.

According to the students, one of their classmates had to be taken into a foster home after suffering abuse, including having her belongings taken away and being locked in a closet. The team researched the transition into foster care, and learned that as many as 90 percent of kids going to foster homes bring little or no possessions with them.

Highland Elementary School and Paintsville Elementary School each earned first place overall in their respective district finals on Saturday in the Kentucky Association for Academic Competition’s Governor’s Cup.

Next month, the Johnson County Sheriffís Office will host its third annual Polar Plunge in conjunction with the Veterans Referral Center and the Johnson County Wrestling Team.
